Van Gogh and the Art of Crating Pictures

Today, Vincent van Gogh is widely regarded as one of the great post-impressionist painters because his work inspired so much of the work of later artists, though in his lifetime he was hardly known at all and he only ever sold one painting. He truly lived the life of a starving, unappreciated artist.

Van Gogh used color and texture to his advantage. Because of this, his paintings are fraught with, and also evoke, various emotions. He is certainly worthy of the entire museum in Amsterdam which is dedicated to his work.

Most notably is his painting Starry Night,  which most prominently uses hue variations of primary colors blue and yellow to depict the eerie night of a city. Inspired by the nightly view from the Asylum at Saint-Remy, where van Gogh was staying while he painted it. Interestingly, and more explanation for the emotions prevalent in his work, are the facts of van Gogh’s lifetime mental illness, his distraught yet passionate love life, and his continual religious devotion.

Though most people would argue the greatness of van Gogh’s artwork, beauty is always an opinion. Even intrigue is not a universal reflection. Each of us has our own view on what is beautiful and what is interesting. We each have unique taste and decorating style, and we each have our own ideas about what should hang on our walls.

If you have paintings in your home, large or small, you will want to take them with you when you move. Paintings require special attention, not unlike many other unique and expensive items you may have in your home, and the crating of pictures is somewhat an art of its own.

You may want to move your artwork with a traditional mover.  They can build  shipping crates for you. As an alternative, you may want to find a shipping company who can transport your artwork in a custom crate using freight shipping.

For shipping within the U.S., wooden crates should be used. For shipping internationally, crates should be made from heat-treated wood. Either specification will require a custom-made crate to snugly fit the exact size of your paintings.
