Moving to a huge city such as Houston can be overwhelming but in a city this size there is a lot to see and do. There are a number of things to do after you relocate to Houston.
Neighborhoods
First of all check out all of the neighborhoods. Because Houston is so large and diverse each part of town has its own character. Chinatown, on the west side of Houston, just outside the loop is a great place for Vietnamese sandwiches, Chinese cuisine, and Asian grocery stores. Great shopping with an Asian flair is in this neighborhood as well including a Japanese dollar store and places to buy culinary equipment like rice steamers and bamboo cutting boards.
Another popular neighborhood is the Heights. This neighborhood has upscale eateries and lots of family attractions. It’s an artsy neighborhood with charming architecture and a small town feeling. It’s a favorite place for weekend bikers to take a ride.
Rice Village, near Rice University, is the place for bookstores, trendy clothing shops, and even a shop that sells everything chocolate. Lots of Houstonians head here for ethnic food and a lively night scene. Near Rice University is also the Museum District. This is where you will find most Houston museums, a huge park, zoo, and outdoor amphitheater. This residential area of stately homes is between downtown and the Medical Center.
Don’t miss the Montrose neighborhood just west of downtown. This hipster neighborhood is home to many alternative bars and hole-in-the wall places to eat. Every year Pride Parade marches past charming bungalows and sleek condos to finish with one of the best parties of the year.
Around Houston
The Space Center, just south of Houston, is a must see when making your list of things to do after you relocate to Houston. The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center is your entryway to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration compound. The Level 9 tour gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the famed center for human spaceflight. From the science demonstration show to a peek at Mission Control there’s something for all ages to see.

Galveston Island, a short drive south of Houston, is the place to go to the beach. You can stroll along the boardwalk or dine at the port side of the island. Almost every weekend there are events in Galveston, including the bike rally, Christmas celebration, and Mardi Gras. Enjoy the Victorian homes and art carved from trees downed by stormy weather. You’ll find lots of fishing and bird watching near the marshes at the east end of the island. The food here is straight out of Louisiana and the atmosphere is decidedly laid back and relaxing.
Shopping
Don’t forget to put shopping on your list of things to do after you relocate to Houston . Chinatown and an area of East Indian merchants are places to find international goods. You will also find a great many wholesale clothing and housewares stores to explore. The Galleria is the most celebrated shopping center in Houston with all of the major upscale department stores and specialty boutiques.
Events
Besides the great neighborhoods to explore and amazing shopping venues there are also a multitude of events in Houston. Concerts, sporting events, the opera, symphony, the theater, art expositions, and so many more events take place each week. Consult the local newspaper or the tourist board’s online calendar to find out what’s happening. Many museums and art galleries have a free day each week or once a month that you can take advantage of when finding things to do after you relocate to Houston.
