Many senior adults would prefer to age peacefully right where they are, never finding it necessary to move. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. Senior moving often becomes necessary for a variety of reasons. You might need help moving a senior into a nursing home, an assisted living facility, or a senior living community where they are able to live independently, but have help available as needed. They might need to move in with a relative for extra help, or decide to downsize and check out RV living to allow them to travel. Whatever the case, however, moving a senior adult can present unique challenges that aren't necessary to consider in other cases of moving.
Decide whether or not storage is going to be necessary. Do you have an elderly loved one who has always decked out the house for the holidays? What about one who has more clothes for each season than they could ever possibly wear? If downsizing is necessary as a result of the move, consider selecting a storage facility to make things a little easier. Clearly label every box, and make sure that decorations, mementos, and other important items are packed and stored in a way that will protect them.
Hire a packing company. Many senior adults don't have the energy to deal with complex packing arrangements. Instead, try bringing in the professionals! They'll pack up everything in the house and make sure that it will be safe throughout the moving process.
Let your senior loved one choose what items can be given up. It can be tempting to just have the family over and spend a few days packing up the house. You all decide if there are any mementos that you would like to hold on to, while the important items for daily living go with your senior loved one. If possible, however, you should allow your loved one to participate in this process and even lead it. They will know better than even their closest child which items are truly important and which ones can be donated, sold, or stored.
Take it one step at a time. Your senior loved one might not have the energy to go through the entire house in a day. Instead, break up the moving process so that you're able to dedicate a couple of hours to it at a time, then return to deal with the rest at a later date.
