Shipping to Malta - International Shipping Rules

Posted on Tue, Jul 05, 2016

International shipping to Malta might sound like a complicated process, but fortunately with some careful planning and the right knowledge, shipping is as simple as mailing a letter to your neighbor down the street.

According to the USPS, Malta prohibits shipment of the following items:

  • Weapons of all kinds
  • Devices used to load weapons such as metal cartridges and firing caps
  • Human remains
  • Graphic and obscene materials and literature
  • Any living plants and animals
  • Lottery tickets and any marketing material of such
  • Radioactive materials
  • Switchblades

Malta's international shipping restrictions are simple—any textiles, foodstuffs, or bags must comply with any and all local health regulations.

When mailing items, also make sure to observe the following rules:

  • When mailing to a street address, Malta suggests you provide a local telephone number for the addressee. When mailing to a post office box, Malta requires it.
  • All commercial shipments must come with an invoice as well as any personal shipments with a value of $300 or more. Place invoices either on the outside of the package or inside with PS Form 2976-E.
  • If you are shipping a prohibited item with a special permit from the Controller of Customers, you must make sure the addressee also have the necessary documents in order.

Whether you are mailing a gift to an old friend or shipping your worldly possessions to Malta to start a new life, here are some fun facts:

  • Malta is in the Mediterranean Sea between Europe and North Africa, Sicily and Tunisia specifically.
  • Speaking of which, Malta used to have a bridge to Sicily.
  • The three islands of Malta are only 316 square kilometers, making it one of the world's smallest countries.
  • Malta has no forest and woodland cover as wells as no mountains or rivers.
  • Homer allegedly wrote about Calypso Cave in The Odyssey.
  • The British ruled over Malta until they gained their independence in 1964.
