Shipping to Juist- Think Drones

Posted on Mon, Oct 13, 2014

Juist is an island with a population of 1721. Its area in square miles is 6.34. It is an Island in Germany. So why do you ask are we doing a blog about a very small island in Germany. It has to do with what is occurring in the world of drones.

As reported by Richard Weiss in Frankfort German and published by Bloomberg, Juist will be the first place (that we have seen) that has been approved for deliveries using a drone. We have read that Amazon, Fed Ex and other companies have applied for licenses for these deliveries, but it looks like Deutsche Post AG, which operates under the name Deutsche Post DHL. DHL is actually the world’s largest courier company. . DHL that is based in Germany has received the first worldwide approval to use drones in shipping goods.
The drones will be used in a restricted area. The “parcelcopters” as the drones are called will be used for a trial period lasting 4 to 6 weeks.

Once the packages are dropped off in the restricted are, a local courier service will take the packages to the intended recipient.
Right now the island is only accessible by ferry and aircraft. It has been noted that the island is a car free zone. The drones will be able to fly for forty five minutes and be guided by individuals at a ground station.
The drones are powered by 4 propellers. Each drone can take about a little more than two and a half pounds per load in containers that were designed specifically for these drones. For the time being, the drones will fly and deliver only when the weather is good. Eventually, the drones are planned to be used during rain, snow, or even when there is dust in their routes.
DHL had to receive permission from numerous Germany departments in order to set up this trial run.

International shipping companies other than DHL will look to see if this trial run is successful. With worldwide health issues at hand, this may be a new frontier in the delivery of medicine and medical goods. Companies that offer a pack and ship service may want to wait and see if Fed Ex or UPS are approved for drone deliveries in the future.
On a larger basis, retailers such as Amazon and Google are testing out drone deliveries. In the US the Federal Aviation Administration is working on rules that will need to be followed for companies that want to use drones for deliveries.

Pack and send is one of the shipping companies in Houston that is following the drone delivery idea very closely. While we do not see this as a futuristic way for our Houston crating service to be use drones, we can see where shipping small packages by drones may be a cost effective way to ship things in the future.

Juist is known for its quiet atmosphere. With cars banned on the island, it is so small that walking to all parts to the island is easy. The drone test makes sense here since Juist is located less than 5 miles from the mainland. On the eastern end of the island, seals are found sunbathing. The island contains wonderful sand beaches that families enjoy year after year. Families enjoy cycle tours of the island.
The island is known for a yearly music festival as well as their fiction festival with a crime theme that is held during the month of September.
Juist is trying to be the first tourist destination that is carbon-neutral. They hope to attain this goal by the year twenty thirty.
