Shipping an engine by freight is a great way to move large, heavy, or fragile items. Most engines can be strapped to a pallet and shipped by freight. If the engine has a high value, then a crate may be warranted, but usually palletized shipping works best. If you are planning to ship a vehicle engine, then this is the best approach to make sure that it arrives safely to its destination.
Preparation
Your engine will likely be considered LTL, or less than truckload shipping. This means that other crates or pallets will be included in the truck along with yours. Prior to shipping, drain all fluids out of the engine. Not only with this protect your engine while it is in transit, but it will also protect other freight around it. Engine shipping goes smoothly when you follow this advice.
Determine Freight Class
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association defines freight class as “a standard that provides a comparison of commodities moving in commerce.” This means your engine will ship with other items that are seen as having comparable characteristics. The four characteristics used to determine class are:
- Density (Weight in pounds per cubic foot)
- Stowability (Ease of transport)
- Handling (Type of packaging and the fragility of the item)
- Liability (Probability that the item may be damaged or stolen during shipping)
Vehicle engines are generally rated as Class 70 freight, but a shipping professional can help confirm this prior to crating.
Packing and Labeling
Consult with your shipping company to determine the best method of shipping your vehicle engine. Engines typically ship on a pallet, but if necessary, a custom crate can be built to better suit the engine. The shipping company will also be able to assist in properly completing the Bill of Landing (BOL) documentation. This tells the carrier what is being shipped, and where it is going. A thoroughly completed BOL can prevent delays such as re-weighs and lost items.
