Gallery owners and artists know the difficulty of transporting expensive paintings.  They have to be packaged carefully in order to ensure that they arrive at their destination as intended--and inexperienced packaging, when enough care wasn't taken to protect the paintings and other artwork, can result in disaster.

When sending art, you have three primary goals:  safety ; professionalism; and economy.  Keeping your packing job professional has a number of advantages:

  • It reinforces the impression that the artwork your customer has purchased is worth the price they've paid.

  • It reinforces your status as a professional, whether you're the artist or the dealer.

  • It makes the entire package look neater--and in the end, it can save you money.

Of course, you already know the benefits in effective packaging to make sure that your purchase arrives safely--but balancing the concerns of safety and professionalism against economy can be a challenge.  Sure, you can wrap the entire painting in a ball of bubble wrap big enough to fill an entire shipping truck; but that's going to eat significantly into your profit in selling the piece.  Instead, you want to ship economically, so that it arrives safely without costing you a fortune.

First, make sure you have the right supplies.  Depending on the value of your piece, you may either be shipping your paintings in a cardboard box, or in a custom-designed crate that has been constructed specifically with your artwork in mind.  Custom-designed crates can be either single-use or reusable--it depends on why you're shipping the artwork, and whether or not it's going to be shipped again in the near future.

Make sure that you have plenty of quality packing tape on hand when you're packing your artwork.  This is one of those areas where you shouldn't skimp--better to have quality packing tape, which will hold everything together throughout the shipping process, than tape that's going to fail halfway to its destination.  Buy the good packing tape.  This is one of those areas where economy is outweighed by safety.
