When you are packing in Houston and preparing your china, be it fine china, porcelain, bone china, or terracotta it is of the utmost importance that you pack it correctly. China is known for being rather delicate and brittle, even if it contains kaolin to strengthen it, and so incorrectly packed china can chip, crack or shatter during the shipping process if not properly packed. Importantly, there is a key distinction between packing plates/bowls and cups, so make sure to take note of the instructions below.
China
- After taping the bottom seams of the box securely, place a layer of packing peanuts two or three deep at the bottom of the box. You want enough to make sure that the china never touches the bottom of the box during the shipping process, as that nearly guarantees that it will break.
2a. If you are placing plates and bowls in a box, place them vertically in the box with a layer of bubble wrap or several layers of blank newsprint between them. Plates are stronger standing up than they are laying down, so be sure to use the correct orientation.
2b. If you are shipping cups, you can stuff the inside of the cup with paper and then wrap them with bubble wrap. Cups, unlike plates, should be placed like they would be if they were sitting on a table in use. You can stack them, but put a piece of cardboard between each cup, in addition to the bubble wrap surrounding them.
- Create cardboard dividers to section off different types of items, and then stuff any remaining space with newspaper. If done properly, when you shake the box you should see no movement at all.
- Put another thick layer of packing peanuts at the top, going slightly above the rim of the box so that they will compress once the box is closed. Then fold the flaps down and tape them into position.
