Moving is always going to be a frustrating process. Even if you've only been in a home for a few months, the amount of "stuff" you've accumulated will surprise you when the time comes to move again. The most difficult place in your house to pack? The closets.
Most people have at least one closet in their home that is a repository for all the things that they don't know what else to do with. It's filled to the brim with random items, many of which you don't even know are there until you dive in and start the moving process. That closet would be an easy place to start packing. Unfortunately, it's also the last place that you want to deal with packing.
Packing and crating a closet in Houston? Follow these tips to make the process easier.
Get out both boxes and garbage bags when you get ready to pack. The boxes are for the things that are going with you. The garbage bags are for the things that aren't. When you're deep into the packing process, it's easy to forget about the part of the process that happens on the other end. As long as everything is in boxes, you convince yourself, you're ready to go--at least until you get to your destination and have to unpack. By having both garbage bags and boxes handy, you can easily dispose of items that you don't want to take with you instead of having to move them, then figure out what to do with them on the other end. Not only will this save you time and effort, it will save on shipping costs.
Get rid of anything you haven't used in a year. Some people discover that when they get ready to move, there are still boxes sitting around unopened from the last move. That means that you're spending time and money moving around items that you don't really even want. Unless it's a box full of pictures or family heirlooms, if it hasn't been used, don't even open it! Take it to the nearest donation center or drop it in the trash. Packing for a move is one of the best opportunities you'll get to dispose of items that you and the members of your family don't want or use anymore. Remember, anything you can donate or throw away now is one less item that you have to unpack when you reach your new home.
Sort items as you pack. There are things in that closet that you use. Some of them, you can't find when you need them. Others you can find, but have better places to keep. Sort through those items as you pack so that when you reach your destination, you'll be better able to put them in the place they'll do the most good.
Fill boxes completely. Make sure that there's nothing in the box that can rattle around after it's sealed. If you need to wrap delicate items or use padding to fill in the space around the items in the box, make sure that you do so. You don't want anything to move around during the shipping process. Also, make sure that you use proper shipping materials. It might sound easier to use newspaper and masking tape, but they're often less reliable than materials that are designed specifically for shipping.
