Moving Services: Packing Up the Linen Closet

moving_services-1The linen closet:  for many people, it's one of the hardest areas to keep organized.  If you have children who are in and out of the closet on a regular basis, it's even harder.  That means that when it comes time to pack up your linen closet, you may be looking at a mess that seems impossible to control, much less pack.

As you're staring into your linen closet, you may be tempted to just scrape everything into a box and sort it out at the other end.  After all, you're going to have to figure out what to do with your new linen closet when you get there, right?  You might as well just wait to sort it out until then.

Actually, there are some serious advantages to cleaning out your linen closet before you move.  For example:

Get rid of towels that are so old no one will use them.  Sure, you're keeping them for rags, or to dry the dog after his bath; but how many towels do you really need for that purpose?  Limit your "rag box" towels to around half a dozen or less and get rid of the ones that you don't need.  This includes those inappropriate beach towels from college that you'd be ashamed for anyone to see.  While you're at it, clean out those decorative towels that you never use--the ones that are scratchy and uncomfortable.  You won't miss them.

Clean out or donate sheets that are no longer in use.  This includes those oh-so-cute princess sheets that were purchased for a daughter who is now in middle school and the sheets decorated with preschool characters that are no longer appropriate for a child in elementary school.  It also includes that gorgeous white sheet set that you haven't put on your bed in years and the sheets with the uncomfortable braid that you don't actually like.  This also applies to "spare" quilts or comforters that haven't been used in years.

Put sheet sets together.  Take the time now to locate pillowcases, the fitted sheet, and the flat sheet for each set.  By packing them together now, you make less work for yourself at the other end--and give yourself the chance to weed out sets that don't have all of their pieces.  Consider placing the second pillowcase and both sheets inside a pillowcase to keep all of the pieces together.

Pack one box that contains only one towel, one wash cloth, and one set of sheets for each member of the family.  Label it in big, bold letters.  That way, when you arrive at your destination, you'll be able to easily identify the box that will allow you to start making your house a home.

Decide what kind of moving service  or moving services you're going to use.  If you're relocating  a short distance, a traditional service will be fine.  If you're moving out of state or out of the country, it might be better to work with a freight shipping service to get all of your items to their destination as inexpensively and efficiently as possible.  Be sure to consult with your packing service to determine what guidelines you need to follow.
