Sometimes, you don't have a lot of warning when the time comes to move. Maybe it's because your lease has run out unexpectedly, or a change in jobs has made it necessary to move quickly; but whatever the reason, you're finding it necessary to pack in a hurry. While there are a variety of moving services that can certainly help you with this process, there are a few things that you can do to expedite your move and make it as smooth as possible.
Pack as you go. Start at one end of a room and work your way across it, placing posessions in boxes as you go. Label the boxes with the room and the number in which they were packed so that when you reach your destination, it will be relatively easy to unpack again. Be sure that you're wrapping any fragile objects and adding plenty of packing material to ensure that nothing shifts around during shipment. Pack all the boxes until they are completely full.
Make sorting part of the process. As you're putting items in boxes, get rid of anything that you haven't used in the last year. There's no reason to keep it, and if you take it with you, you're just going to have to unpack it at the other end. In rooms like your bathroom and kitchen, pay special attention to items that are liquids or powders and make sure that they're packaged carefully. Find a bottle of lotion or body wash in a scent that you don't really like? Go ahead and toss it. Now's the time to get rid of clutter that you won't use when you move.
With a little more warning prior to a move, you have the ability to have a yard sale, take items to consignment sales, and choose between selling and donating valuable items. If you're going to another location in a hurry, weigh the potential added income over the convenience. It may be that in this case, it's more valuable to you to simply donate items that you won't be using instead of trying to sell them.
Take it a room at a time. Looking at the house as a whole can make a move feel like a huge proposition, and you might get overwhelmed quickly. Looking at it a room at a time, on the other hand, feels much more manageable.
Work with a shipping company. If you're moving out of your city--especially for moves out of state or out of the country--you'll find that working with a shipping company may be less expensive than using a traditional moving service. Work with yourshipping company to ensure that you're getting the services that you need most and that all of your possessions are protected as well as possible during shipment.
Enlist help. It's a lot easier for people to help on the "packing" end than the "unpacking" end. The "packing" part of the process is mostly just putting things in boxes, and most people can handle that with little direction. Unpacking, on the other hand, might require a more personal touch, so you'll have to be more involved; but having help can be the difference between a successful move and one that seems to drag on forever.
Decide how you want your items delivered at the other end. A white glove delivery service will bring all of your boxes inside, take them off of their pallets, and help inspect your furniture and other items, while curbside delivery will leave that part of the process to you. Some people prefer to take care of inspection and moving things inside themselves, while others like the extra service--it all depends on what you need.
