How to Ship a Single Piece of Furniture

ship_a_single_piece_of_furnitureThere are many reasons why you might need to ship a single piece of furniture.  Perhaps you're moving out furniture after an estate sale, moving a piece of furniture purchased at a thrift shop, or transporting  a piece of furniture to a family member out of state.  No matter what your furniture shipping needs, you want to know that your furniture is packaged properly so that it will be protected throughout the entire process.

Note:  in general, it is recommended that if you are sending multiple pieces of furniture to the same location via freight, you send all of the furniture at once, rather than in several small shipments.  This will save you time, effort, and money in the long run.  However, if you are only dealing with a single piece of furniture, there are several things to keep in mind.

First, choose a  company that is experienced in dealing with furniture.  Many companies may specialize in smaller objects or bulk shipments; you want to be sure that your shipment will receive all the care and attention that it deserves.  Second, ask for the  company's recommendations and what method will be most practical for you.  They may recommend shipping your single piece of furniture via freight or through blanket wrapped moving depending on your situation.

Often, the optimal furniture moving experience is moving your furniture through freight, typically on a pallet.  If you're using a pallet to move your furniture, there are a few recommendations to keep in mind:

  • Make sure that the pallet is the right size for your furniture.  While you don't want to have a lot of excess space on the pallet, you also don't want to let your furniture hang over the edges of the pallet.

  • You may need to remove any pieces from your furniture that need to be removed--cushions on the couch, for example--and make sure that they are also packed correctly.

  • Determine whether you prefer white glove service, where your piece of furniture will go to a warehouse and be unpacked and inspected before its delivery to your home or office, or curbside service, where the item will be delivered to the curb still on the pallet.  This service will help determine your choice of shipping company.
