Are you a college graduate, or soon-to-be graduate, who plans to move cross-country for the next phase of your life? Perhaps you've landed your first job, or you just want to explore a new location. Now's the time to start planning how to handle the big move. It can be overwhelming! You might be torn between wanting to have the essentials with you while also wanting to rid yourself of the unnecessary “stuff” that you have accumulated over the years.

The easiest way to get started is to assign everything to one of the following four categories:

  1. Keep
  2. Sell
  3. Donate
  4. Discard

You should keep items you use regularly, irreplaceable items of sentimental value, and, of course, important documents. Next, you can make some cash when you sell items that you no longer need but that are in good condition. Think textbooks, electronics, movies, and music. Donate clothing and other unwanted items to a charity or thrift store. Finally, you can throw out or recycle the majority of the clutter that you have left.

Ready to move? Here are some tips for adjusting to your new city or state:

  • Research the local businesses and services that you'll need. Some of the basics include banks, stores, libraries, and government offices.

  • Visit in person, if possible, before your relocation. Walk around, take public transportation if available, and just familiarize yourself with the layout of your new neighborhood.

  • Be social, both before and after you arrive. Go online or chat with locals in person to get recommendations for things to do and sites to see.

It's normal to feel homesick and disoriented when you move to a brand new place. Some things that can help you feel at home right away include games and mementos from your childhood, family heirlooms, special artwork, and even specialty food items that you can't find in your new hometown.
