When you're packing up items for shipment, it can be difficult to tell what supplies you'll need most. In Houston, crating is done for a variety of items that require extra protection before being shipped to their destination. With a custom crate, you can rest assured that your item has all the protection it will need during the shipping process. For example:

Chandeliers are very difficult to ship because of their many small, dangling pieces. Packing them in a crate, however, takes this easily into account. The chandelier is hung on a wooden 1 x 4 in the top of the crate, suspended just like it would be in a home or business. Then, packing peanuts and other materials are added to cushion the other pieces of the chandelier.

Medical equipment often requires specialty crates because of the size and delicacy of the equipment. If necessary, medical equipment is braced within the crate to ensure that it is stable before packing material is added to keep it in place throughout the shipping process. Custom crates are one of the best ways to transport medical equipment, which is often awkwardly sized or shaped.

Paintings, pictures, and other flat artwork are typically protected by placing a one-inch layer of Styrofoam all around the picture. Crates for these items are best custom constructed when the picture is an odd size, but it works for any type of artwork. Crating is also useful for large museum, gallery, or show displays of artwork that may need to be packed up and moved again.

Other artwork, like statues and sculptures, can be placed in a custom crate for ease transportation or shipment. These crates are constructed exactly to the specifications of the item.

Things to Note About Using Crates

  • Custom crates require that the measurements of the item are taken before the crate is built.
  • Custom crates are reusable. This is particularly useful for artwork and other items that will be shipped or transported back and forth several times. Simply remove the item at your destination and store the crate until it's needed again. Then, when you're ready to move the item again, pull the crate back out.
  • Crates can be made for both international and domestic shipments. It is important, however, to note your crate's destination: international shipments are placed in crates made of heat-treated wood to meet international shipping standards.
