Shipping out of Houston and crating packages can seem like a real challenge, especially when you're shipping internationally. When sending goods to to Jamaica, like many other countries, has its own specific set of restrictions, but they're all manageable--just make sure that you're prepared ahead of time and have a pretty good idea of what you're doing.
A Houston crating company can offer advice when importing goods into Jamaica.
Some things to know when shipping to Jamaica:
Prohibited items (as listed on the USPS website)
- Bees and materials used by beekeepers
- Citrus fruits/plants and parts thereof (no upsetting the local ecosystem by introducing new things of your own!)
- Specific food items (make sure you look over this list carefully--you don't want to misstep!) These items include cocoa, coffee, condensed milk, cornmeal, edible oils, honey and beeswax (no bee anything going to Jamaica!), and sugar
- Paints
- Cotton seed and plants, and parts thereof (again, no upsetting the local ecosystem!)
- Lighters containing butane gas (these probably aren't the safest thing to ship anyway!)
- Meats (these don't travel particularly well internationally anyway)
- Radioactive materials (this might be best for the safety of the postal workers and your recipient anyway)
- Switchblade knives
Specific restrictions on other items
- Electronic items have to be in their original packaging, just like they would be if they were coming from the manufacturer--no relabeled boxes or odd packaging. This includes cell phones and their accessories.
- Medications need to be labeled with the name and formula in English. Medications for treatment of venereal disease must be accompanied by directions explaining how to use them. No sending random pills in unmarked containers--and particularly no sending medications for venereal disease at random.

Did You Know? Since you're shipping to Jamaica, you might want to know a few things about it...
- Jamaica was the first country in the Caribbean to gain independence.
- Rum is Jamaica's national drink.
- Looking for the largest island of English-speakers in the Caribbean? That might be important information if you're lost at sea and need to get in touch with someone at home, right? Look no further than Jamaica!
- Ian Fleming is partial to Jamaica. His home, "Goldeneye," is in Jamaica. Ten of his James Bond novels were written there.
- Jamica's big on "firsts." They were the first tropical country to enter the Winter Olympics. That started them out with quite a handicap (it's hard to practice winter sports in a tropical climate!), but they've gone on to make a name for themselves anyway.
- You might have an image in your head of islands that are pretty flat, but Jamaica has some gorgeous mountains which are often covered by a mist that looks blue from a distance. This mist is what gave the islands their name: the Blue Mountains.
- Jamaica's national dish is Ackee and Saltfish.
- Jamaica might be one of the best-known islands in the Caribbean, but it's only the third biggest. The island that rings in as the largest is Cuba.
- Eaten a banana recently? You'll appreciate this, then: ringing in another "first," Jamaica was the first place in the western hemisphere to start producing bananas commercially, which is part of what makes them so readily available to the rest of the world!
- Obviously Jamaica's tropical climate hasn't slowed them down in their acquisition of Olympic medals; it just means that they have to be a little bit more creative about their training methods. Other than the United States, Jamaica has won more world and Olympic medals than any other nation.
