Freight Packing: A Few Tips

If you're getting ready to pack up a huge order for freight shipping for the first time, you're probably feeling a little uncertain.  After all, you want to make sure that your items arrive at their destination in excellent shape!  There are a few tips to keep in mind as you're packing everything up:

  • Wrap and protect each delicate item individually.  Even if they're all going in the same box or on the same pallet, protecting each item individually ensures that they're all provided with the padding and wrapping they need.  Sturdier items can be wrapped or packaged together.

  • Label each box with its contents so that you know what is in each one when it arrives at its destination.

  • After you've packed a box, shake it gently to make sure that nothing is rattling around.  If it does, you'll need to repack.

  • Use strong, sturdy boxes or custom-made crates.

  • For items that won't fit in a box, make sure that they are secured on a pallet and that corners are protected.

  • Package items that may be affected by dirt or liquids.

  • If you need extra protection for fragile items, after placing items in one box, place the first box in a second, larger box and fill the extra space with packing peanuts or bubble wrap.

  • If you're using a pallet for freight shipping, try to distribute weight evenly.  Ideally, the top surface of the pallet should be flat.

  • Secure the sides of the pallets using 1 x 4’s.  Protect the outside of your shipment using large sheets of cardboard.  Wrap stretch wrap move the 1 x 4’s and over the cardboard reinforcement.

  • When you wrap your pallet, the goal is for it to feel like one solid item within the wrapping.  Start at the bottom and work your way to the top, wrapping as tightly as possible.
