Moving is stressful. From finding your new home to actually moving into it, the entire process can be daunting. Here are a few things to be sure to put on your to-do list. (And remember, a full-service moving company can mark a few of these things off your list for you -- they can pack, move, and unpack everything so you don't have to!)

  1. Gather your supplies- Start asking friends and family for extra boxes and old newspapers. You can ask around some of your local stores for boxes they were going to throw out, too. Make sure you have makers, packing tape, and extra sheets that you can use to wrap larger items with. If you pick up used boxes from grocery stores, stay away from the boxes that were used to transport fruits and vegetables.
  2. Make reservations- If you're going to be renting a moving truck, make sure to call or go online and request a reservation. Having your vehicle ready and waiting can seem like a small thing, but it can reduce a large amount of stress.
  3. Make a clean sweep- As you pack up a room, clean that room. This will help you to not have a houseful of cleaning to do after everything is boxed. Before you move any boxes or furniture into your new home, go in and give it a deep cleaning. It's so much easier when you don't have to move anything in order to clean.
  4. Update your info- Once you are officially at your new address, fill out a "Change of Address" card at for the post office. Also update your address on your driver's license, with your bank and credit card companies, and your doctor's office. You will also want to update everything at work for your tax info, too. (To pet owners: If your animal is micro chipped or tagged, don't forget to update your contact information with your vet's office.)
  5. Out with the old- As you go through your house packing up, make a donation pile for all the items you no longer need, use, or wear. Scaling down on what you take with you can help you avoid unwanted clutter in your new place. Don't forget to shred old papers.
