Using a Crating Service from Houston to Ship to Norway

Posted on Mon, Feb 23, 2015

Norway is a beautiful country. Rugged mountains go straight into a beautiful North Sea coastline, leading to some of the most beautiful vistas you'll ever see. Unfortunately, moving to Norway can be a hassle - especially if you don't know what you are or aren't allowed to take with you. We're happy to help! Here are some important restrictions that the country places on what can or cannot be shipped to Norway.

According to the US Postal Service, Norway prohibits

  • Firing caps
  • loaded metal cartridges for portable firearms
  • non-explosive elements of artillery fuses and matches
  • Pharmaceutical products of any kind, whether of synthetic extraction or classified as naturopathic preparations
  • Radioactive materials
  • Substances considered explosive, inflammable or dangerous

Norway also has some restrictions on specific items that are important to know if you're planning on shipping your household:

  • The Technical Alcohol committee must approve all Cosmetics, perfumes and other products used for sanitation that contain alcohol.
  • If you're planning on importing radio and telecommunications equipment such as your remote control, wireless telephones or other related equipment, be sure to have that important authorized by the Norwegian Telecommunication Regulatory Authority in Oslo. Otherwise, the import is prohibited. That regulation, however, does not apply to ordinary TV and radio receivers.
  • The Norwegian Ministry of Health has to authorize all imports of pharmaceuticals and related products you need for medical treatment. If you need to have serum, vaccines or other bacteriological and serological preparations important, try to do so through a lab or institute that is approved by the state.
  • Money is another important import good to discuss. The National Bank of Norway has to authorize all imports of Norwegian bank notes and coins, along with securities of all types. The only exception here are bills you bring in for exchange as well as bank drafts used for payment of goods, which you can import without authorization.
  • Any product that's originated from an animal and intended for your or your pet's consumption or use have to be authorized by the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture. You will also have to get permission from customs before the import. However, some products are exempt; you can get a list of them from the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Finally, be careful when importing any type of firearm, part of a firearm, ammunition or other military equipment. The Norwegian Police has to authorize it before letting you into the country.
  •

If you're planning on bringing in any commercial items, Norwegian customs will require a commercial invoice in duplicate for you to take it into the country.

Why would you go through all of that trouble? Because, as we mentioned in the first paragraph, Norway is truly stunning. With over 20,000 km (approximately 13,000 miles) of coast line, it is certainly a country dominated by its seafaring roots. The world-famous Fjords are tongues of water cutting into the land, which have been used for centuries by the native people as natural spots for fishing and trading harbors. At the edge of a Fjord, you'll feel like a Viking - embarking for unknown land through beautiful scenery.

The second landscape feature marking the entire country are the mountains. It's no surprise that Norway offers both the world's longest road tunnel (the Leardal road tunnel at 15 miles) and the world's deepest underwater tunnel at 287 meters deep. As one of the world's biggest exporters of oil in the world, it's an incredibly rich country, and has been named by the World Peace Index as the most peaceful country in the world.

In short, it's a great country to visit or move to - and your Crating Service in Houston can help get you there! Contact us to let us help you ship your goods to Norway.
