When museums or private collectors send their pieces around the country or the world to be in exhibitions, the paintings need custom crates to ensure the art gets to where it is going safely. Sure, if a collector never let a painting out of their private collection, nothing could happen to it. But no one would ever get to see it either. For example, if a collector in Houston had a famous Marcel Duchamp work, and someone asked if it could be in a Duchamp retrospective in New York, the collector could find a shipping company that crates paintings in Houston and have the piece shipped to New York. The proper shipping company will build a custom crate to fit the painting exactly so there is no shifting.

Marcel Duchamp was an extremely influential artist, and any private collector would be lucky to have his work. His famous works reside in museums around the world. For example, his painting, Nude Descending a Staircase is at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The title is misleading however. The painting, created in 1912, was heavily influenced by Cubism, and shows a form moving down a staircase, almost like many still frames placed on top of one another. The form is also abstracted into shapes.

Duchamp also did many sculptures. He coined the term "readymades" to describe his works that were made from existing objects. One of his famous readymades, Fountain, is in fact just a urinal turned on its side, with a tongue in cheek commentary about the wealthy.
