Whether you’re an avid collector or simply have a few heirloom pieces passed down from previous generations, your antiques are no doubt special to you. If you’re planning to move soon, here is some advice for antique shipping that will help you protect your valuables.
If you are packing your items yourself, take some time to inspect your items in order to determine if there are loose pieces that need to be secured ahead of time. Make notes on each item as to any defects that are on it, and take several pictures from different angles as well.
Consider having extremely valuable pieces appraised ahead of time. That way, you can be sure you have adequate insurance coverage, and will be able to purchase an additional rider if need
be.
If there are detachable pieces, remove them so they are not detached during moving. Place them inside a roll of bubble wrap, padded envelope or a smaller box with lots of packing peanuts in it.
Secure dressers and cabinets with drawers in them with shrink-wrap in order to keep them from sliding back and forth while in transit. Use foam pads in between chair railings, and wrap
tables with old blankets to help prevent them from becoming scratched. Padding will be needed on all sides of an antique mirror. Take care not to place other objects on top of a
mirror, and make sure to the mirror in a location where it is not likely to move around in the truck if the truck were to stop very suddenly.
Consider having items such as china, clocks or pictures professionally packed for moving or shipping. Moving companies and shipping companies can help you with this. For very high value
items, you may want to consider ordering a custom crate. Let a professional build the custom crate. Professionals will know how to load, pack and block and brace your valuable items.
