The  Handy   Shipping guide has reported a gloomy outlook for worldwide air shipping. In today’s recovering global economy, this may actually make sense.  The Port of Houston is recording record years.

While cargo shipping via ships may take longer, it is also cost effective for larger size shipments. With the advance of Supply Chain Management, companies are able to better predict the need for supplies and finished manufactured goods.  When a company plans the correct order quantity at the correct time for both production and sales, they can save on the more expensive air shipping costs.

For some of smaller orders (less than a cubic meter) air shipping will be the preferred method of shipping. Companies that are able to take advantage of shipping goods via ocean in containers save substantially on shipping costs. Even ten years ago, we saw companies air freighting furniture over to England. In today’s economy, these same companies have realized that shipping the furniture via container saves substantial money.

There may be hope on the horizon for the air shipping industry. Supposedly, a leading indicator of the economy is the corrugated box industry. When orders are up for this one industry, it shows that manufacturing and shipping are on the upturn. According to Shirley Brasher at AAA Box www.aaa-box.com  in Houston, Texas  “The Houston news reported that corrugated box industry is a leading indicator of how the economy is doing.  When the economy took a downturn, the box sales decreased. As the economy improved during 2012 box sales increased.”

For companies that  handle antique shipping, china shipping, computer and office equipment shipping, marble shipping, artwork shipping, glass shipping, sign shipping, car and auto shipping, and furniture shipping, it is great to note the positive outlook that Shirley Brasher has expressed.

Since most air shipments use corrugated boxes to protect shipments during transit, there is definite optimism for the air shipping industry in the future. Families living abroad often send small birthday and holiday gifts to relatives in corrugated boxes. As the world wide economies pick up, we expect gift giving to also increase.
