 While shipping containers are used in worldwide shipping, it is always fun to look at other uses for  these versatile structures. Resourceful people and businesses have been using containers for alternate uses. Now Green architects are also repurposing these containers.  If you are looking at estate shipping overseas, shipping artwork, or international furniture shipping, you may consider using a container.

 Think containers that are now used for relief in disaster areas, foundations for small stores, condos and vacation homes. The not so elite have been using these containers for shelters for years.  For multistory stores, these containers are easily stackable.

During the construction of the replacement towers in New York, a container was made into a restaurant. As the buildings were built taller, the restaurant inside the shipping container was hoisted from floor to floor to feed workers as they worked on higher and higher floors. No more brown bag lunches for these construction workers.

Now think about colleges that need instantaneous housing. Why not make a dorm out of a shipping container?  A little fancier and you have an apartment. What if you need a quick jail?  A shipping container is a good idea.

Why has the reuse of containers taken off?  First of all, they are affordable.  Sometimes containers were just stocked in ports or even melted down for reuse.  Using a container is significantly less expensive than using new building materials.  Re use of resources is very popular in the building industry throughout the world.

So how do these containers look as homes, apartments and buildings?  Some of the containers are left exactly as they were purchased. The outsides still look just like shipping containers. Other containers are use building materials and apply them to the outside of the container. Siding, wood, or even brick will do make the container  look just like any other home or business.  Individuals and business often use more than one container to make a larger home or office.
