Details to Consider when Shipping Antiques

Posted on Tue, Apr 08, 2014

Antiques are one of a kind and require one of a kind shipping to provide appropriate protection.  If you are planning on shipping your valuable antiques and are looking for an appropriate shipping company you should consider the following:

Experience
It almost goes without saying that you will want a shipping company that has experience shipping antiques.  You don't want your piece to be the first antique the company has ever handled.  Instead, you want handling antiques to be common for the packers and movers.  You want them to handle your delicate piece with care and as if it was their own.  Someone who has experience working with auctioneers, collectors or even museums is ideal.  Even better, find a packing and shipping company that is trusted by antique dealers.

Provide Assessment

Antiques vary greatly so you will want the packing and shipping company to assess each item first.  To determine appropriate methods for packing and shipping evaluate:
•    Risk
•    Conditions of pick-up
•    Appropriate mode of transport
A one-size-fits-all solution does not work with antiques, so each piece needs to be evaluated independently.  A variety of packing options are available including:
•    Blanket wrap (no crating required)
•    Crate
•    Box
•    Palletize

Based on the assessment the packing plan can be formed.  In addition items can be shipped by UPS, FedEx, trusted freight carriers or via the company movers.  After packing method has been determined the shipping plan should be finalized.

If you are considering shipping your antiques internationally, please check with the country that you are shipping to. International shipping of antiques may require documentation for import into a country.
