How Much Can You Bring

How much you can bring with you depends on the size living space you will have. It is recommended that you ask to see the specific room/apartment you will be living in. Take measurements and bring them home with you. Using a computer or a piece of paper (graph paper works well) create a scaled layout of your new residence. Now you can measure the furniture you would like to bring with you and see if and where it will fit. You will also want to ask what furniture is provided with the room.
Don't overlook storage space. Measure any closet space you will have in your new residence so you can determine how many clothes, shoes and other items you will be able to bring with you.

What Should You Bring

In addition to the necessities such as clothes and toiletries, you will want to bring photos and other special mementos. Consider bringing pictures and artwork that you can hang up to decorate your walls. This will help make your new place feel like home. It will also give you something to talk about with the other residents and the staff who will be interested in getting to know you.
If you have a favorite pet you need to check the policy for the place you are moving to. Different assisted living facilities have different rules. Some allow small cats and dogs and others don't.

What Should You Do With Everything Else

You will likely find some items you no longer want or need and can donate to charity. Check for local charities that will pick up donations so you don't have to worry about transporting them to the charity.
For items you aren't ready to part with but don't want to move with you consider renting a storage unit. Another option is asking a family member to store them for you. After you have settled into your new living arrangement you can decide if you want to move additional items.
For items that are special to you but not going to work in your new place consider giving them to friends and family members. Don't hesitate to ship a special item to a grandchild in another state or a friend across town. When they use the piece of furniture they will think fondly of you.
