Posted on Wed, Jan 29, 2014

Unlike linens and trendy accessories, people don't purchase new furniture every year--it becomes a part of daily family life. Some treasured furniture pieces are shared from generation to generation. When a move is necessary, you wouldn't think of leaving the furniture behind. If you have a move planned, you can send furniture without worry by using a few professional moving tips. If you plan to move your furniture out of town, you may want to consider using cross country movers or even moving your furniture via freight.

If you are moving yourself, we have a few handy suggestions.

Plan, plan, plan! Before you send the first item you'll have to think about the logistics. Measure your furniture, at least the large pieces and compare these to the doorways of your current home and your future residence.
You can take some furniture apart to save on space in the van if you are moving it yourself.  For example, a futon that slides into a bed often has screws and a lift bar. Take the furniture apart, put the screws and disassembled items into a zippered storage bag. Label each bag with a permanent marker. That will make reassembly a lot easier.

Have furniture tools handy. If you plan on packing and loading furniture yourself, you'll need some tools like a hand truck or a dolly. Your favorite dresser may weight quite a bit. Move items, from point A and B easier with some moving tools. You may also need moving pads and blankets. Sometimes it's easier to slide a piece of furniture than to actually lift and carry it.

Plan realistically. When moving an entire household of furniture, it may take more than an afternoon to prepare the furniture for moving. Have a realistic plan and enlist reliable help when needed.
Pad and protect each item.  Moving multiple pieces? Moving blankets make an excellent protective barrier between items that need to be moved. Plan ahead for shifting, which often occurs during moves. Take the time to wrap each piece with a blanket, bubble wrap or some type of padding.
