Sending College Transcripts Overseas-Houston Shipping Co Advice

Posted on Mon, Apr 22, 2013

As the end of the semester closes we are seeing an increase in the number of transcripts that we are shipping internationally. Make sure that the student has an official transcript from the University or school that they are attending.  For loan and grant purposes, a copy taken off of the internet is usually not sufficient.

When students are sending transcripts countries outside of the United States of America, there is certain information that they will need to have the transcripts delivered. An individuals or companies name. A complete street address, along with the city and zip code. A phone number or email address for the recipient.

We suggest that the student keep a copy of the transcript that they are sending.  The student should also ask for the tracking number for their transcript shipment. That way, they can make sure that the package has been delivered.  If for some reason the package is misplaced on the recipients end, your student still has proof of shipping as well as delivery.

Students should not wait until the last possible day to ship their transcripts.  Due to delays in customs, delays due to weather conditions and public holidays in other countries, last minute shipping of transcripts is not advised.

Try to bring the transcripts in to the business that is handling the transcript shipping at least two hours before the business closes. This way the business can make sure that the transcript is picked up that day for shipping.

As your student moves back overseas when their schooling is complete, we can offer a few international shipping tips.

Only pack the clothing that you intend to use when you return home.  If you live in a warm country, the down jacket that you have purchased for your four years in the United States may not be used again. There are always consignment resale shops or places that are happy to take donations of warm winter clothing.

Do not plan on shipping perfume, cologne or anything in pressurized cans. Such items as deodorant and hairspray should be left in the United States.  Make a list of everything that you are packing to ship overseas. Put the value of each items next to the item on the list.  You will need to prepare a commercial invoice, or have on prepared for you.  At any rate, you will need this list in order to have your package leave the United States.  Since packages go through customs, you do want to make sure that you have everything listed properly.

The charges for the international shipping will be based on both the weight and value of the packages you are shipping as well as on the dimensions of the packages.  Dimensions are length, width and height of your packages.  Every inch both larger or smaller can make a difference in the prices that your student will pay.  Ask your student to ship everything at one time if possible. A professional packing company should be able to combine packages and save you money.  Paying for empty space is not advisable in international shipping.

If your college student is considering shipping back the automobile that he or she purchased in the United States, please look into various options. If possible, consider using Ro-Ro.  This is roll on and roll off the ship.  As an alternative method of shipping you may want to ship the vehicle inside of a container. The method you choose may depend on the value of the vehicle and the port to which you are shipping the vehicle.

Allow extra time for the car to  arrive, as you will need to arrange for space on the ship, and plan around boat sailing dates.  Once again, you will be dealing with customs in both the United States and also the country that you are shipping the vehicle to.
