Moving Overseas Shipping Options

Posted on Tue, Mar 25, 2014

A move overseas requires thought and planning. Decisions need to be made about which household items you want to move overseas and how they will be moved.

Will your items be shipped by air or by boat?

Shipping your items by boat will take longer but is significantly less expensive. However, you should factor in the cost of renting furniture while you are waiting for yours to arrive as that may make the cost difference less substantial.

If you elect to transport by boat your household goods will be packed into seaworthy containers. They will then be transported via rail or truck to the port where they are loaded onto a boat. Once the containers have arrived in the destination country they will be unloaded and go through customs. Make sure to mark every box with the contents of the box. You will need to fill in international shipping documents.

We suggest having professionals pack your belongings and load your container. Remember, only the first two hours of loading are free.

If you do not have a significant amount of property you may want to consider sharing a container. Less than Container Load (LCL) shipment will reduce your costs. You can get quotes for shipping via the cubic meter.

Will you move your car?

Cars can be moved by boat or by air although shipping an auto by air is incredibly expensive. By boat the options are Full Container, Roll On Roll Off (RORO) RORO is a vessel designed to carry wheeled cargo and is basically a giant warehouse. No matter how the car is transported you will need to have certain documentation to move your car:
• Original Title
• Bill of Sale
• EIN Number
• Export documents
• Inbound Customs Clearance - The Bureau of Consular Affairs or another comparable governmental agency will have the specific policies of the country you are moving to.

Keep in mind the level of gas should be less than 1/8 of a tank before departure. In addition you can consider shipping your motorcycle, boat, or RV. The same documentation will apply.

You will want to value your property during shipment to protect yourself against damage or loss.
