More Tips to Reduce Stress During Estate Shipping

Posted on Tue, Dec 17, 2013

The settling of an estate after a loved one passes away is often stressful. It can be overwhelming and extremely emotional. Not only are you dealing with the death of a family member or friend, chances are you’re likely to be moving through the various stages of the grieving process. All of this  while planning everything from the categorizing of household items,  the appraisal and  selling many  items.  This will also entail  packing and the many other duties required before you can begin the real process of estate shipping.

The strain of anyone’s passing is a delicate situation and should be handled as such. Remember that everything from antiques and jewelry to personal documents should be handled with the utmost concern and sensitivity. But beyond that, your loved one’s keepsakes and mementos should also be treated with the care they deserve. With this in mind, here are some suggestions to assist in the process:

  • Order boxes and supplies to ensure that all  works of art, china collections, etc., arrive damage-free to their final destination. Do the same for any small items so that they are not misplaced during the packing process.
  • Divide all areas of the home so that they become preludes to a final destination for all items left to the estate. Mark each room with titles like “consignment,” “donation,” “move with estate,” etc. Make sure all boxes within these areas are labeled accordingly. This process will be much more helpful than simply pushing objects to various corners of each room.
  • After sorting of all goods are done, call in a reputable appraisal company if there is any concern regarding value of items left in the home. The value of items should be determined before shipping so that appropriate coverage can be assigned. A certified appraiser would be very helpful.
  • Do not fully pack delicate and fragile items. This is important to note if you hire a company that will want to be certain the items are packed to their standards. Keep in mind that glass will often be bubbled and double-boxed, art is packed in custom-built boxes or crates to size, and antiques are often boxed, crated or blanket-moved. Furniture can be either blanket wrapped moved, or delivered via freight shipping.

Using one company for the entire packing and shipping process will help decrease your stress level.  Look for a company that can pick up, pack and ship all of your items.
