Fortunately, which items can't be shipped are public knowledge. The U.S. Postal Service has a list of such items.

The restrictions are, for the most part, based on common sense. You don't want to ship items that are likely to explode in transit and possibly injure postal workers and damage other shipped items. Nor do you want to send illegal items. It will get you arrested, and it will get arrested whomever you're shipping to.
