Whether the estate you're responsible for is that of a friend, parent or other relative, or someone else entirely, taking care of all of the items a deceased individual has left behind can feel like an immense challenge.  It's a huge weight on your shoulders as you figure out what to do with everything, where to put it while you're selling or donating it, and how to deal with all of the other responsibilities associated with closing the estate.  What are you supposed to do with all that stuff, anyway?

One easy way to have the estate taken care of is to hire an auction company or another company that specializes in estate sales.  While they will take a  portion of the proceeds from any sales that they make, they will also take the weight of the process off of your shoulders. Not content to let someone else do it?  Consider placing the items for the estate online.

Whether you're placing those items on Craigslist, eBay, or another online venue, there are a few steps that you'll want to follow.

  • Be sure of what you have.  Before listing items for auction, have an idea of what you're willing to sell them for.  Sure, you're trying to get everything taken care of as quickly as possible; but you don't want to undervalue the items in the estate, either.  If you don't have the time to devote to looking up each item in the estate, consider hiring someone to come in and appraise the estate as a whole.
  • Take comprehensive pictures of each item from every angle.  That way, you have proof of the condition that the item was in when it left your hands.
  • Develop a relationship with a shipping company that will help you send out each item.  In a varied estate, you may find yourself needing to package everything from china and other small, delicate items to large, awkward pieces of furniture.  You want to make sure that you're working with a shipping company that knows how to properly care for each item to ensure that the best possible care is taken of each shipment.
  • Always document the dates and times when you send out items, and make sure that you keep tracking numbers until the items are in the hands of the buyers.
  • Follow up with buyers shortly after they receive their items to ensure that everything has arrived and that they're happy with the shipment.

Moving the items from an estate shouldn't be the most stressful part of the process.  Ideally, you'll want to be able to take care of your estate shipping and estate packing in one stop:  a company that has the necessary packing materials and reasonable rates, as well as accepting your items for shipment and sending them on your way.
