El Salvador is the smallest but most densely populated country in Central America. This area has a rich cultural history beginning with early civilizations including Mesoamerican nations such as the Cuzcatlecs and the Mayan civilization, and later, assimilation as part of the Spanish Empire. This history has created a unique culture to flourish in El Salvador. A few interesting cultural facts about El Salvador include:

  • El Salvador is the only Central American country without an Atlantic coast line. However, it is known for its beautiful South Pacific beaches, home to the world surfing competitions.
  • El Salvador gained independenceafter being under Spanish rule for more than three centuries.
  • El Salvador is known as the “Land of Volcanoes” because of the more than 20 volcanoes located throughout the country. Travelers can rest easy – only two are active!
  • Tropical forests have expanded over the last two decades thanks to conservation efforts, making El Salvador one of the few countries to experience reforestation.

Economically, El Salvador relies heavily on agriculture, with indigo and coffee being primary exports. As industrialization continues to develop, El Salvador has diversified its economy by growing the manufacturing sector as well.  Exports coming from El Salvador are bound by the policies of the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) which the country entered into in 2006.
